Antique Scrimshaw carved on actual whales' teeth and bone !!

This beautiful authentic antique whale's tooth scrimshaw has a very detailed scene of an actual whale hunt on each side.  The realism is striking and there is no doubt that the artist took a long time to complete the work.  The tooth is heavier than most and measures an amazing 7" by 3". The tooth itself is interesting with its nice patina and a variety of natural features. This appears to be a very old tooth and is a very nice piece. The interior of the tooth is quite interesting as well.  (25)  $1295

This beautiful authentic antique whale's tooth scrimshaw has a portrait of Commander William Bainbridge on one side.  The likeness is quite good when compared to portraits.  His face is framed by an anchor and bowline.  The delightful banner below states "The Frigate Constitution outlasts Java" with his name along the anchor stock tying it together. There is quite a bit of detail and the skill of the artist is evident. The other side takes advantage of the natural features of the tooth by posing a spread eagle in front of an anchor and the ship captained by Commander Bainbridge - the USS Constitution.   One can sense the history when you realize that the tales of Commander Bainbridge were only a generation or two old.  The tooth measures 5" by 2". The tooth itself is interesting with its nice patina and a variety of natural features. This appears to be a very old tooth and is a very nice piece. The interior of the tooth is quite interesting as well.  (46)  $835

A delightfully unique whale tooth carving - the eagle with its beak opened just enough to reveal a tongue.  This hefty tooth measures 4" long and nearly 3" wide.  The detail is nice and it looks like the eyes are staring right at you.  Clearly a lot of time was spent on this amazing piece.  Carvings of this type are rare and this piece shows clever design and accuracy.  The shiny tooth is so smooth to the touch that holding it is as much fun as looking at it. (53) $885
